Yahweh, My Righteousness Proves Your Care of Me!

How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not! – Matthew 23:37

A Prayer by David.

Hear, Yahweh, my righteous plea;

Give ear to my prayer, that doesn’t go out of deceitful lips.

Let my sentence come forth from your presence.

Let your eyes look on equity.

You have proved my heart.

You have visited me in the night.

You have tried me, and found nothing.

I have resolved that my mouth shall not disobey.

As for the works of men, by the word of your lips,

I have kept myself from the ways of the violent.

My steps have held fast to your paths.

My feet have not slipped.

Keep me as the apple

of your eye.

I have called on you, for you will answer me, God.

Turn your ear to me.

Hear my speech.

Show your marvelous loving kindness,

you who save those who take refuge by your right hand from their enemies.

Keep me as the apple of your eye.

Hide me under the shadow of your wings,

from the wicked who oppress me,

my deadly enemies, who surround me.

They close up their callous hearts.

With their mouth they speak proudly.

They have now surrounded us in our steps.

They set their eyes to cast us down to the earth.

He is like a lion that is greedy of his prey,

as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

Arise, Yahweh, confront him.

Cast him down.

Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword;

from men by your hand, Yahweh,

from men of the world, whose portion is in this life.

You fill the belly of your cherished ones.

Your sons have plenty,

and they store up wealth for their children.

As for me, I shall see your face in righteousness.

I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with seeing your form.

[Psalm 17]

1. What does David list (lines 2,5-12)? What are his requests? What truths does he state?

2. How do you and others “speak proudly”? How do you see God’s face and his form?

3. Jesus, thank you for wanting to hide me under your wing, forgive me for not letting you by…

Beginning of Book I

Two Kinds of Life—Our Choice

(A Preface to the Psalms)

He showed me a river of water of life…On this side of the river…was the tree of life…yielding its fruit every month…The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants serve him…They will reign forever and ever – Revelation 2:1-5

Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stand in the way of sinners,
nor sit in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in Yahweh’s law.
On his law he meditates day and night.

He will be like a tree planted
by the streams of water

He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water,
that brings forth its fruit in its season,
whose leaf also does not wither.
Whatever he does shall prosper.

The wicked are not so,
but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For Yahweh knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked shall perish. [Psalm 1]

1. How do walk, stand, sit, wicked, sinners and scoffers all differ? How do you meditate?

2. What do fruit and leaf represent? Do you have these things? When is “the judgment”?

3. Yahweh, I choose to delight in your word and meditate on it always, please help me to…
